Is it a good idea to have more than one blog? Why or why not?
- Argument #1: No, because you’ll be spreading yourself too thin. You’ll be spending twice as much time on maintenance, ad optimization, link-building, writing, etc.
- Argument #2: Yes, because you can write about more than one subject. You’d get bored writing about the same thing every day.
Both are good points. You definitely don’t want to get bored with your blog’s topic, but it’s not a good idea to double your workload. If you’re a serious blogger, you could already be spending over three hours a day doing blog-related things. You don’t want to double that, do you?
What’s the solution? Take your pick:
- Write for only one blog, and possibly get tired of writing on the same topic every day.
- Guest post on blogs of other topics. Guest blogging has the added benefit of promoting your blog.
- Write on Newsvine. Disadvantage: You’re mainly limited to news-type writing.
- Find some more bloggers and start a collaborative blog on a different topic.
- Start a tumbleblog. A tumbleblog (try Tumblr.com) is a mini-blog consisting of little text snippets, links, videos, and images. You can spend five minutes a day writing a random thought, and dedicate the rest of your time to your normal blog.
- You could blog for NTugo. Just fill out the “Bloggers Wanted” form (available on any of the NTugo Blogs) and your request for a contributor account will be reviewed. Upon acceptance, you gain access to write on any of the NTugo Blogs. The advantage here is that you don’t have to handle any of the blog management chores.
It’s a good idea to do some writing in other areas than you usually do, but how you do it is up to you. You could start another blog, or you could try one of the options above.
